4 min read

Introduction

Perched high on the slopes of the Oloolaimutia Hills, Masai Mara Sopa Lodge is a true “grand dame” of the Masai Mara. As one of the first lodges built in the area, it claimed one of the best positions in the region: a panoramic hilltop setting with sweeping views across the eastern Mara plains.

If you’re looking for a safari stay that feels historic, spacious, and ideal for groups, Sopa Lodge is an excellent choice.

Architecture & Atmosphere

Masai Mara Sopa Lodge was designed as a tribute to the local Maasai culture. All the buildings are built in rondavel style—traditional African round houses with conical thatched roofs. This gives the entire property a distinctly African character while still offering plenty of comfort.

  • The Main Lounge – A huge circular lounge centred around a dramatic 20‑metre‑high fireplace. This space becomes the social heart of the lodge on cool evenings, where guests gather to relax, chat, or enjoy a drink by the fire after a day on safari.
  • The Gardens – Because Sopa is such an established lodge, the grounds are incredibly lush and mature. Manicured lawns, tall trees, and colourful flowers attract resident wildlife, including zebras, monkeys, and tiny antelopes like dik‑diks, which you can often spot wandering through the gardens.

The overall feel is classic and slightly nostalgic—perfect if you enjoy the charm of an older, well‑loved safari lodge.

Why It’s Perfect for Groups

Masai Mara Sopa Lodge is especially popular with group‑joining safaris and larger parties, and it’s easy to see why.

  • Lots of Space – With 99 rooms, including standard cottages, suites, and a honeymoon suite, the lodge comfortably accommodates large groups without feeling crowded. There’s plenty of seating in the lounge, bar, and gardens, so everyone has space to relax.
  • Social Dining – The circular dining room serves generous buffets with a mix of international, pan‑African, and Asian dishes. One of the highlights is the “Africa Night” held every other evening, where the buffet features regional African flavours and the atmosphere becomes extra festive.
  • The Ol Murrani Bar – A standalone bar with a large timber deck overlooking the surrounding bush. Every night, the staff puts out meat for nocturnal wildlife, and it’s common to see hyenas and honey badgers just a few metres away while you enjoy your drink. It’s an unforgettable experience, especially for first‑time safari guests.

For groups, these shared spaces make it easy to socialise, celebrate, and share the magic of the Mara.

Activities Beyond the Game Drives

Game drives in the Masai Mara are, of course, the main attraction, but Sopa Lodge also offers several on‑site activities that are perfect for relaxed afternoons between safaris:

  • Swimming Pool – A large outdoor pool with views over the valley, ideal for cooling off after a morning in the bush.
  • Maasai Cultural Talks – Learn directly from staff about Maasai traditions, stories, and the history of the land—great for guests who want more than just wildlife sightings.
  • Nature Walks & Archery – Guided walks along the hill slopes introduce you to some of the 450+ bird species in the area, as well as plant life and tracks. Archery offers a fun, family‑friendly activity back at the lodge.

These extras make Sopa a good fit for longer stays, where you might want a mix of adventure and downtime.

Classic Safari, Modern Comforts

Whether you’re planning to join a group safari or travelling with friends and family, Masai Mara Sopa Lodge offers a rewarding mix of classic safari charm and modern convenience. From its hilltop views and Maasai‑inspired design to its generous buffets and lively bar deck, this is a lodge that delivers a true “old‑school” Mara experience without sacrificing comfort.
