The Masai Mara offers incredible wildlife viewing year-round, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to see and experience. Here's everything you need to know to plan your safari for the perfect season.
It depends on your priorities:
• For the Great Migration: July-October (peak is August-September for river crossings)
• For best value: January-March (excellent wildlife, half the cost, fewer tourists)
• For perfect weather: June-October (dry and sunny)
• For photographers: January-February (green landscapes, calving season)
• For avoiding crowds: November-December or January-March If you want migration + good weather + best wildlife viewing, choose August or September.
The migration is typically in the Masai Mara from July to October, with peak numbers in August and September. However, exact timing varies by year because the wildebeest follow the rains. Key events:
• July: Herds begin arriving from Tanzania's Serengeti
• August-September: Peak river crossings at the Mara River (most dramatic scenes)
• October: Migration starts moving back south to Tanzania
• November-June: Wildebeest are in Tanzania (Serengeti and Ngorongoro) Important: Migration timing is not exact. Herds might arrive late June or stay until early November depending on rainfall.
Absolutely YES! The Mara has incredible resident wildlife year-round:
• Large lion prides (some of Africa's best lion viewing)
• Leopards, cheetahs, and other predators
• Huge elephant herds
• Buffalo, hippos, crocodiles
• Giraffes, zebras, gazelles
Many experienced safari guides argue that January-March actually offers a better experience than peak season: excellent wildlife viewing, fewer crowds, lower prices ($100/day park fees vs $200), and lush green scenery. You miss the migration spectacle, but you gain intimacy and value. The migration is amazing, but it's not the only reason to visit the Mara!
April and May are the low season for good reason - heavy long rains make roads difficult and sometimes impassable. Wildlife viewing is still possible, but:
• Many roads become muddy and limit where vehicles can go
• Thick vegetation makes animals harder to spot
• Some camps and lodges close during this period
• You might get stuck in the park if roads wash out
Unless you're a hardcore birder (migratory birds are present) or photographer seeking specific rainy season shots, we recommend avoiding April-May. Every other month offers better conditions and experience.
Masai Mara park fees have two pricing tiers:
Low Season (January 1 - June 30):
• Adults: $100 per person per day
• Children: $50 per person per day
High Season (July 1 - December 31):
• Adults: $200 per person per day
• Children: $50 per person per day
This means a 3-day safari costs:
• Low season: $300 per adult in park fees
• High season: $600 per adult in park fees
Accommodation also typically costs 30-50% more during high season. Visiting in January-March can save you $400-600 per person compared to August.
Booking timeline recommendations:
Peak Season (July-October):
• Book 6-8 months in advance
• Popular camps and lodges fill up quickly, especially for August river crossings
• Last-minute bookings are difficult and expensive Shoulder Season (January-March, November-December):
• Book 2-3 months ahead for best selection
• More flexibility, better availability
• You can sometimes find good deals 4-6 weeks before departure
Low Season (April-June):
• Last-minute bookings possible
• Many properties offer significant discounts
• However, selection is limited as some camps close
Our group safaris have guaranteed departures, but we still recommend booking early during peak season to secure your preferred dates.
